Safe Swap: Belly Butters

This one is for all my pregnant Mamas!

I ruined so many bed sheets using straight up coconut oil slathered all over my belly during both pregnancies. 🤪 Buuuut it was effective because even though my petite frame packed on 60+ lbs while growing each of the boys – I don’t have a single belly stretch mark!

🔍 It was tempting to succumb to the savvy marketing & big promises on a belly butter label 10 years ago, but I’m grateful that I still held some relatively solid label reading skills and opted for just coconut oil.

🔎 Now with more options available, and more ingredient knowledge for both good ingredients you’ll want on that belly and bad ingredients to avoid, I’ve been able to create this safe swap guide for you all (and hopefully save your bed sheets, haha!)…

 
Sadly, belly butters are no less toxic than many conventional lotions. They contained ingredients like…

 

🚫 PEGS
🚫 FRAGRANCE
🚫 PETEOLATUM
🚫 ETHOXYLATED COMPOUNDS
🚫 RETINYL PALMITATE
🚫 PHENOXYETHANOL
🚫 PETROLEUM DERIVED COLORANTS
🚫 EDTA
🚫 BHT

Even worse were the entirely FALSE marketing claims right on the packages like…
🤢 “All natural ingredients”
🤢 “No preservatives”
🤢 “Chemical free”
🤢 “Pregnancy Safe”
🤢 “Compatible with breast feeding”


𝙻𝚊𝚋𝚎𝚕 𝚁𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚃𝚒𝚙𝚜:

  • Don’t trust Amazon’s ingredient labels. 99% of the time I’ve found they’re incorrect. Always go to the official brands website.
  • Always look beyond “Key Ingredients” and at the full label
  • My hope is that some day these terms will be strictly regulated… but until then, trust me when I tell you that is NO universe were those statements true.
