Safe Swap: Breath Mints

I looove it when you ladies remind me of categories that need a ditch and switch post! Feel free to share any additional genres of product that would be helpful, but for now let’s look at breath mints…
What you’ll find in the check out line of most major retailers is going to be a chemical concoction that holds direct links to a slew of nasty side effects…
  • Sucralose

An artificial sweetener made my adding chlorine to sugar that is linked to digestion and gut issues, headaches, allergies, and so much more.

  • Aspartame

The first, worst for your health, and most widely used artificial sweetener. Dozens of studies have linked aspartame to serious health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, seizures, stroke and dementia, as well as negative effects such as intestinal dysbiosis, mood disorders, headaches and migraines.

  • Artificial Flavors

Much like “fragrance” on a personal care product label, these two words can hide up to 3,000 additional lab made chemicals… none of which are beneficial to your health.

  • Genetically modified soy ingredients

Our family chooses to avoid all varieties of soy for its estrogen mimicking properties, but add in the genetically modified aspect and its an even bigger no.

  • Artificial dye

Research has associated food dyes with problems in children including allergies, hyperactivity, learning impairment, irritability and aggressiveness. It’s an absolute “no” in our family.

  • Propylene glycol

It’s blacklisted from being applied to my skin… so of course it’s not going in my mouth. This is a main component in antifreeze, used to de-ice airplanes, and has no business being ingested.

  • Polysorbate

Used as an emulsifier and de-foamer… but the material safety data sheet says: Slightly flammable to flammable in presence of heat. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation. May cause adverse reproductive effects based on animal test data. May cause cancer based on animal test data. No human data found. May affect genetic material (mutagenic). Wooooft… thats gonna be a no for me.

  • High fructose corn syrup

HFCS is made up of cornstarch and 3 different kinds of bacteria. It is made by fermenting corn starch several times in order to produce an unnatural mixture of glucose, fructose and other forms of sugar that are known to cause diabetes and obesity.

Yiiiiikes, am I right!?

Thankfully swapping is easy with simple ingredients that your body knows exactly how to process.
