Safe Swap: Lip Scrubs

Wanna know one of my bad habits?


I chew on my lips way too much. If someone snaps a picture when I don’t know it… I’m probably chewing on my lips. So I currently have a weird combination of winter dry, chapped, cracked, chewed up lips… hahaha – sounds appealing right?


I decided I need to mix up some sugar scrubs for myself to exfoliate and heal, but in the process I realized there are a lot of pre-made scrubs out there! Who knew!

Sadly it was no surprise to me that they’re all a toxic ingredient catastrophe. Let’s take a looksee…


Fragrance ➙ A loophole in the cosmetic industry that allows an undisclosed, untested concoction of up to 3,164 chemicals
Flavor ➙ Same loophole as above, just a different vague term
Artificial Dye ➙ Animal studies have even linked food dyes to organ damage, birth defects and certain cancers.
BHT ➙ Probable human carcinogen
Phenoxyethanol ➙ The byproduct of combining two carcinogens
Petrolatum ➙ Often found contaminated with carcinogen 1,4 dioxane

Ethoxylated compounds ➙ Polysorbate 20 ➙ Another byproduct of mixing a known carcinogen with other ingredients
PEGs ➙ At risk of contamination with heavy metals and the carcinogen 1,4 Dioxane
Triethanolamine ➙ Classified allergen, and human immune and respiratory toxicant
Propylene Glycol ➙ The main component of antifreeze
Retinyl palmitate ➙ Synthetic vitamin A linked to reproductive toxicity, cellular level changes, and organ system toxicity


Any combination of that toxic load… Plus a price tag that ranges from $8-48 per tiny jar just seems like crazy talk to me!
Now I don’t always DIY but this is just too simple not to! Here are a few easy varieties I’m going to try with ingredients I already have on hand!


🥧 𝐏𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐞
•Two Tablespoons Organic Coconut Oil
•One Tablespoon Raw Honey
•One Tablespoon Organic Brown Sugar
•One Teaspoon Organic Pumpkin Pie Spice
🍋 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬
•One Tablespoon Organic Coconut Oil
•Four Tablespoons Organic Sugar
•One Teaspoon Raw Honey
•8 Drops of Organic Lemon EO & Organic Grapefruit EO
💋 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧
•Two Tablespoons Organic Brown Sugar
•1/2 Tablespoon Organic Almond Oil
•1/2 Tablespoon Raw Honey
•1/2 Teaspoon Organic Cinnamon


I also found the cutest variety of little scrubs on this website – I would just substitute the food coloring in the first recipe for ground up dehydrated organic strawberries : https://www.themakeupdummy.com/…/diy-lip-scrub-recipes…/
