Safe Swap: Tanning Lotion

I’ll start by saying, this is absolutely one of the times where you’re getting what you pay for! But when you start thinking that making healthy choices is expensive… I would suggest looking up the cost of treating illness.

For women who apply a light tanning lotion daily [like Jergens Natural Glow], those ingredients are consistently absorbed in and then accumulate heavily. I was sooo sad to see some REALLY toxic ingredients here like:

MethylPARABEN, EthylPARABEN, and PropylPARABEN Parabens have been found in 99% of breast cancer tumors and are well known to disrupt the endocrine system.

DMDM Hydantoin This ingredient slowly releases FORMALDEHYDE into the product. Formaldehyde is well known to be cancer causing and is banned for use in other countries.

Mineral Oil Obtained from crude petroleum oil ,it may contain various amounts of carcinogenic PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and other petroleum contaminants. There is consistent evidence that untreated or mildly-treated mineral oils cause cancer of the skin in humans.

BHT A toluene-based ingredient that is suspected endocrine-disrupting and carcinogenic.

The best swap I could find is Chocolate Sun
  • If you like to apply daily then I would choose the level 1 shade. For a quick deep tan that won’t be reapplied daily, I would choose level 3.
  • It smells heavenly, has a great consistency, and the ingredients are incredibly safe! Check them out
