Safe Swap: Toothpaste

🦷 Of course I have my favorites listed in the LWM Masterlist, and we’ve had lots of discussion around toothpaste here in the past but I decided we needed an official D&S post!
Our family has ALWAYS chosen to utilize fluoride free toothpaste, and the boys and I are cavity free!
Just like everything I share here… I am not here to tell YOU what to feel comfortable with as a family, but simply to share why we have chosen this route!
🚫 Research provides us with some seriously conflicting information regarding fluoride in drinking water and dental products…
🚫 In 2016 the EPA was served with a petition that includes more than 2,500 pages of scientific documentation detailing the risks of fluoridation to human health. In particular, the petition notes, “the amount of fluoride now regularly consumed by millions of Americans in fluoridated areas exceeds the doses repeatedly linked to IQ loss and other neurotoxic effects.”
🚫 As for fluoride’s effects on the brain, in 2014 Lancet Neurology released a study, authored by a Harvard doctor, among others, that classified fluoride as a developmental neurotoxin. It wasn’t the first time.
🚫 In 2012, a meta-analysis, also by Harvard researchers, clearly showed that children exposed to fluoride in drinking water had lower IQs, by an average of seven points, in areas with raised concentrations. At daily doses ranging from 0.7 to 2.3 mg/L day of fluoride, additions adverse effects include behavioral alterations, neurochemical changes, hypothyroidism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have all been demonstrated.
In addition to avoid fluoride, most conventional toothpaste brands also utilize toxic ingredients like..
✖️BHT: The United States Department of Health and Human Services list BHT as a known carcinogen.
✖️Saccharin: Common allergic reactions include breathing difficulties, headaches, skin irritation, and diarrhea.
✖️Sucralose: Known connections to leukemia and substantial gut health issues
✖️SLS: Considered a moderate hazard with links to cancer, neurotoxicity, organic toxicity, skin irritation, and endocrine disruption.
✖️Artificial Flavors: A loophole that hides up to four thousand additional chemical ingredients
✖️PEGS: According to a report in the International Journal of Toxicology, pollutants found in various PEG compounds include ethylene oxide (used to manufacture mustard gas), 1,4-dioxane, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and heavy metals (lead, iron, cobalt, nickel, cadmium, arsenic).
