As innocent as they seem, regular scented candles are a huge source of indoor air pollution and they put off chemicals that are considered just as dangerous as second-hand smoke.

Many people are opting for the cozy appearance of wax warmers as a solution to avoiding lead contaminated wicks. I totally understand how nice a wax warmer looks and feels, especially in the fall, but letโ€™s first revisit why this is typically NOT a less toxic option…

Paraffin is a petroleum waste product and has to be deodorized and chemically bleached before it can be made in to wax.

Paraffin wax is what is used in the vast majority of wax warmers, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned… both of which are known carcinogens. In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles/wax cubes are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes.

Additionally, artificial fragrance is a chemical concoction of over 3k hazardous substances. Many being known carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and organ toxicants.

Keep in mind that just because something says it โ€œcontains pure and natural extractsโ€ does NOT mean thatโ€™s all it contains. Thereโ€™s no such thing as a โ€œblueberry sconeโ€ extract, guys. It may have the tiniest drop of a naturally sourced scent, and be 99.9% artificial, but they can still use that term as a marketing ploy.

The only option I feel comfortable recommending as a swap is available at:

Utilizing organic coconut oil and organic essential oil blends, you can pop these babies into your warmer for a much safer solution!
